The characters, Scout Nevada Skyburn (Steve), Navy Cdr. Fred (Mark), and Marine John "Mad Jack" Percival (Shaun) muster out on the Imperial Naval base (Fred/Jack) and Imperial Scout base (Nevada) on the planet Mimere, Shiigus Subsector, Vland 2914.
They are debriefed by their commanding officers and offered military passage to Altman (Shiigus Subsector, Vland 3117) where they can begin their lives as civilians. On leaving the bases, however, they are approached, individually, by a man named German Reade who claims to have been tipped off by their respective COs that they may good candidates for employment. Reade works for a company called "Helios Light Shipping" although it's clear that transportation isn't their main business. Reade meets with them together and offers them a small job involving some "disturbances of the peace" on the planet Khunimmam (Shiigus Subsector, Vland 3214).
Khunimmam is a very sparsely populated, desert world with one very small town (Haierburg, pop. 400) and a Type E starport. The planet was, however, once used as an Imperial Army training ground and still maintains some communications infrastructure. The civilians living in Haierburg are paid by the Imperium to maintain the starport and keep the military facilities on "life support" in case the planet is again needed for training.
The Imperial Knight, Branden Maille, that governs Khunimmam is away in the Spinward Marches helping deal with civil unrest in that Sector. The Imperial military doesn't generally waste its time on the affairs of minor planets, so in his absence Maille has discharged his peacekeeping responsibilities to Reade and his group. Maille, incidentally, also governs neighboring Dusuureg and Karmanidora and is one of the Knights in service to the Duke of Shaia.
For nearly a year the citizens of Haierburg have been plagued by raiders who are operating out of one of the old Army Forward Operating Bases (FOBs). These are elements of a gang-like group that developed during the Knight's absence. Reade would like the characters to "take care" of the problem and while he didn't specify how, it was pretty clear he wasn't talking about diplomacy. For their efforts Reade offered them 20,000Cr each and to pay for their expenses on return.
Skyburn, Fred, and Percival all accepted the deal and, for 5,000 Cr. each, booked passage from Mimere on a Jump-3 passenger ship bound for Shaia (keeping the receipts). During the week in Jump other, naturally inquisitive, passengers expressed some disbelief that the party's final destination would be Khunimmam, which is not exactly a tourist location. Skyburn claimed that his uncle had requested some soil samples from the planet which people generally accepted at face value.
After arriving on Shaia, the characters spoke with some longshoremen about passage to Khunimmam. After the usual quizzical looks, they were directed to the "offices" of the "Shiigus Downspin" shipping company (SDSC). Inside they were met by Darron Kampf, the operator of SDSC, grizzled and unkempt, sitting at a paper filled desk, and smoking a cigar. When asked about passage to Khunimmam, Kampf was not quite buying the "soil sample" excuse, but agreed to send them on one of his supply ships with return passage for another 5,000Cr. The supply boats have no passenger berths, so the characters spent their week in Jump sleeping on boxes of cargo, but they were ex-military and didn't complain too much (except for Fred who was in the Navy and used to sleeping in more comfortable quarters).
The session ended with the characters arrival in Khunimmam, where they found a typical Type-E starport - a fenced in area with four landing pads and a few concrete buildings for housing cargo, plus a bunkhouse for supply ship crew. The next step is to get a ride to Haiersburg and figure out what to do next.
